Why popular weight loss meds pose a major health risk

The Dangers of Weight Loss Medications
Everyone is scrambling to find an "easy and quick" weight-loss fix. Unfortunately, many of today's popular weight-loss medications come with significant, often overlooked risks.
GLP-1: Famously Known as Ozempic
According to statistics, 1 in 8 Americans is taking a GLP-1 medication, whether Ozempic or Wegovy — that's approximately 12% of the U.S. population, and the number of Americans using GLP-1 medications for weight loss has more than doubled over the past three years.
What started as a medication for type 2 diabetes has become the latest quick-fix weight-loss trend. And while people are experiencing weight loss and achieving their desired appearance , it often comes at a steep cost and the results are short-lived, with weight shooting up immediately upon stopping the medications.
Though rarely talked about, GLP-1 medications carry serious risks and potential long-term side effects, including:
- Pancreatitis
- Kidney damage
- Muscle loss – up to 40% of the weight lost on GLP-1 medications can come from lean mass, including muscle
- Digestive issues, including stomach paralysis and intestinal blockages
- Nutritional deficiencies
These aren't rare, isolated side effects — they're documented risks affecting a growing population of users, many of whom were never given the full picture before starting treatment.
The Real Cost of a "Quick Fix"
What's marketed as a simple solution is, in reality, a trade-off — rapid weight loss in exchange for risks to your organs, your muscle mass, your digestion, and in some cases, permanent changes to your body that can't be undone.
Losing weight the healthy way should be the goal, because healthy weight loss is more stable, safer, and easier to maintain long-term — and it doesn't require gambling with your health to get there.
The Diet Scientifically Proven to Help You Lose Weight — Without the Risk
Research shows that a plant-based diet is one of the most effective dietary approaches for weight loss, with none of the risks associated with medications or surgery.
In a recent study known as the VEGPREV study, researchers followed 90 overweight or obese participants for 12 weeks. Each participant was assigned to one of five diets: a vegan plant-based diet, the Mediterranean diet, the EAT-Lancet diet, a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, or a standard healthy diet based on World Health Organization recommendations.
Of all five diets, participants following the vegan, plant-based diet experienced a 6.7% decrease in body weight — significantly greater than those on any of the other protocols.
The research is clear: sustainable weight loss doesn't have to involve injections or surgery. For most people, the challenge isn't knowing what diet works — it's knowing how to follow it consistently.
If you're looking for a simple, plant-based weight-loss plan that takes the guesswork out of healthy eating, we've created one that's easy to follow. You'll receive structured meal guidance, practical food recommendations, and personalized support to help you stay on track every step of the way.

Top 6 Foods for Weight Loss
1) Eat This Bread and Lose Weight: How Wholegrain Ancient Grain Bread Is Key to Weight Loss
If our diet doesn't contain adequate nutrients, the body will still think it's starving, even if we're eating a lot — and we keep overeating to try to compensate. For many people, it's not about how much you eat, but what you eat, that determines whether you feel full and satisfied.
Only when the food we eat contains adequate fiber and nutrients does the stomach send the signal to the brain to stop eating. If we eat food devoid of nutrients, we're never truly satiated, and the cycle of overeating continues.
Fiber from real whole foods is the only healthy way to get fiber and maintain gut health.
Wheat bran is one of the best sources of fiber, but it's not recommended as a standalone supplement. It's best absorbed from real bread that contains all three parts of the grain, including the fiber-rich bran.
For real, 100% wholegrain, ancient-grain bread, try the Einkorn Bread from Joseph's Organic Bakery. Our breads are never refined — we don't separate the three parts of the grain, and we never use white flour.
Modern commercial bread causes inflammation and weight gain. At Joseph's Organic Bakery, our breads are made with ancient, anti-inflammatory grains, and our special preparation process ensures they're packed with the fiber and nutrients that keep us satiated. When the body gets the nutrition it needs, toxic cravings and overeating stop — naturally, without medication.
The complex starches and intact fiber in wholegrain einkorn are digested slowly. Instead of causing a rapid glucose spike, they deliver a steady stream of nutrients to the distal intestine, which triggers sustained GLP-1 release — your body producing it on its own.
Because our einkorn sourdough breads are high in dietary fiber and resistant starch, they fuel the beneficial bacteria in your gut — supercharging SCFA production, which stimulates natural GLP-1 secretion.
Our ancient grain sourdough breads are alkaline superfoods. Unlike acidic, inflammatory modern GMO wheat, ancient grains are non-GMO and actually have anti-inflammatory effects.

2) Green Tea: Boost Metabolism and GLP-1 the Natural Way With an Ancient Drink
Research shows that catechins in green tea help increase metabolic rate and fat burning, while also strengthening bones (and even gums).
Green tea can also boost GLP-1 production naturally. It contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol that supports GLP-1 release. A 2014 study found that green tea extract increased GLP-1 in patients with type 2 diabetes and lipid abnormalities, and another study found green tea produced the highest GLP-1 levels after 120 minutes of in vitro digestion.
Even one cup of green tea a day offers real health benefits. For the full effect, aim for 3 cups a day (paired with Cistus tea). Avoid drinking green tea at night — instead, opt for cistus alone or combined with ginger root in the evening.
But not all green tea is created equal. If the soil it's grown in is contaminated with heavy metals, the leaves absorb them — turning what should be a health food into a source of toxins.

3) Fermented Vegetables
If you're on a weight-loss journey, fermented vegetables can be a valuable addition to your diet. These nutrient-dense foods offer several benefits that support weight loss.
First, fermented vegetables are low in calories while still delivering a satisfying, flavorful eating experience. They add a burst of flavor to your meals without meaningfully increasing your caloric intake, so you can enjoy a variety of delicious foods while staying within your calorie goals.
Second, the probiotics in fermented vegetables help optimize gut health, which is closely linked to weight management. A healthy gut microbiome supports better metabolic function and lower inflammation — both key to weight regulation.
Finally, fermented vegetables are rich in dietary fiber, which promotes fullness and supports digestion. Adding fiber-rich foods like these to your meals helps curb cravings, regulate appetite, and support a healthy weight.
Probiotic strains in fermented vegetables heal the gut, enhance digestion, and promote fat loss.

4) Stress-Relieving Herbs
High cortisol levels from chronic stress can lead to stubborn abdominal fat — it's actually a survival mechanism, which is exactly why it's so hard to lose.
Cortisol stimulates fat storage in the abdominal area and slows metabolism, making it very difficult to lose weight even with diet changes, because as long as cortisol stays elevated, that stubborn belly fat persists. It can also increase cravings for sugary foods and disrupt hunger hormones, leading to overeating.
If you struggle with chronic stress, consuming relaxing herbs — as teas or supplements — can help stabilize cortisol levels and support the adrenal glands, where cortisol is produced.
For stress-relieving support, try our Calm & Tranquil formula. This liquid herbal tonic relieves anxiety, balances emotions, supports brain function, improves focus, and helps protect against stress. It gives the brain the right nutrition while clearing out toxins.
It also helps restore key minerals and antioxidants, reducing brain inflammation — supporting relief from anxiety and depression.

5) Plant Foods: Load Up on These Vegetables
Eat as many vegetables as you want, and you won't gain weight! (This doesn't include potatoes, which should be avoided.)
A great example is cucumber — one of my favorite foods. Cucumbers are almost entirely water (97%), which helps you feel fuller. Combined with their fiber and electrolyte content, they also provide vitamin K to support strong bones — making them the perfect hydrating, filling snack.
Try to eat salads once or twice a day. Add red bell peppers, green peppers, romaine or green leaf lettuce, and toss in basil, green onions, wild arugula, or cilantro for flavor.
The fiber in vegetables keeps things moving and prevents constipation, which itself contributes to bloating and excess weight around the waist — so staying regular matters.
Cooked vegetables are often easier to digest. Make soups with zucchini, squash, onions, and broccoli, cooking just until soft (avoid overcooking, so you preserve both color and nutrients).
Aim to eat the full color of the rainbow when it comes to vegetables, and opt for non-GMO whenever possible.
6) EVOO Olive Oil (MUFAs)
People often wonder whether they should eat fats like avocado, especially when trying to lose weight. I believe avoiding all fat is a mistake.
Not all fats are alike — our bodies respond differently to different types.
Saturated fats are inflammatory and contribute to weight gain.
Unsaturated fats — like those found in olive oil and avocados — are the healthier choice. Liquid at room temperature, they come from plant sources like olives, avocados, and nuts, and their consumption has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
People in the Blue Zones and Mediterranean regions consistently show lower rates of obesity and heart disease, despite eating a diet high in fat. That's because they're eating unsaturated fats, which help lower LDL cholesterol and reduce inflammation. Studies show that healthy fats reduce the risk of obesity-related disease and support a healthy weight.
- Reducing appetite: Oleic acid promotes fullness, helping control calorie intake.
- Boosting metabolism: Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) enhance fat burning and energy use.
- Improving health: Packed with antioxidants and healthy fats, olive oil supports metabolic health and reduces inflammation.
1–2 tablespoons of olive oil daily is optimal for weight loss when paired with a balanced diet and exercise.
